MEXICO CITY and ROCHESTER, Minn. — Ten years ago, Médica Sur became the first international member of the Mayo Clinic Care Network, a select group of institutions worldwide that have access to Mayo Clinic knowledge, expertise and resources. That relationship became the starting point for a collaboration that has grown over time.

After becoming a care network member, Médica Sur began accessing Mayo’s expertise so they could provide patients with more of the care they need, close to home. Médica Sur physicians connected directly with Mayo Clinic specialists on questions of patient care using an electronic consulting technique. Médica Sur physicians have access to the latest Mayo-vetted medical information through an online database developed and used by Mayo Clinic physicians. These tools, in addition to healthcare consulting, have helped Médica Sur continue to provide the best care for its patients.

“The relationship between Mayo Clinic and Médica Sur has grown because, in both institutions, values such as ethics and professionalism are the engine of their activity centered on the best service to the patient,” says Misael Uribe Esquivel, M.D., chairman and founder of Médica Sur.

Over time, the relationship between Médica Sur and Mayo Clinic deepened and provided further opportunities to work together. Some examples include:

  • In 2018, Mayo Clinic opened a patient information office at Medica Sur. Office staff help with travel, lodging, billing and insurance arrangements; provide a general orientation to Mayo Clinic; enable a more efficient review of medical records; and coordinate future appointments. The office does not provide medical care.
  • Médica Sur has hosted academic symposiums featuring Médica Sur and Mayo Clinic specialists in neurosciences and cancer.
  • In 2022, Médica Sur and Mayo Clinic unveiled an expanded collaboration centered on enhancing breast cancer care, including diagnostics and treatment, with plans to add other forms of cancer and additional medical specialties.

“Médica Sur and Mayo Clinic are values-driven organizations with the patient at the center,” says Jorge Pascual, M.D., interim president of Mayo Clinic International and executive medical director of the Americas. “Each milestone in our relationship has reflected that commitment, and we look forward to continuing to work together to advance care for the patient.”

Médica Sur joined the Mayo Clinic Care Network in May 2013. Through the care network, select healthcare organizations around the globe access Mayo Clinic knowledge, expertise and resources. Newsweek ranks Médica Sur as the No. 1 hospital in Mexico and Mayo Clinic as the No. 1 hospital in the world.

Médica Sur remains independent and a member of the Mayo Clinic Care Network.
